In The Last Fourteen Days

These photos are a selection from a series of photographs I have taken over the last fourteen days in and around Bath, there really is something about black and white film that is just beautiful. More can be seen on my Flickr account.

Alvaro Sanchez-Montanes

I was going through the photographic archives of Sweet Station earlier and came across these by Alvaro Sanchez-Montanes. 'He documents the abandoned ghost towns in Namibia that over time have been taken over by the Namib desert. With a post-apocalyptic feel, the desert appears to be swallowing the houses', I think they are pretty fascinating.

The Hollywood Issue- Fourteen Actors Acting

The New York Times Magazine have invited this year's greatest performers "to show us- in a few gestures and with a few props but without dialogue or story- what acting is." My personal favourites are Natalie Portman, Tilda Swinton and James Franco (seducing himself). Directed by Solve Sundsbro, music by Owen Pallett... also check out behind the scenes.

Noah Sheldon

I have just seen these on Nowness and I think they're hilarious!
http://www.nowness.com/day/2010/11/13/1136/united-bamboo-haute-cat-ure#share They're by photographer Noah Sheldon http://www.noahsheldon.com/ and I think it's a mixture between the cats expressions and the clothes they have been put in.

Kazumasa Nagai and Luis Dourado

I came across some very striking posters earlier by Kazumasa Nagai from the 1960s and 70s at http://pinktentacle.com/2010/11/posters-by-kazumasa-nagai/. They are all very impressive viewed all at once too on Pink Tentacle. I then thought they have some resemblance to some of Luis Dourado's work, particularly his 'Into Space' series, which is also awesome. http://www.luisdourado.net/illustration/lol/

Alice Early

Photos I took of Alice Early's Final Collection at Kingston 2010. http://www.ftape.com/rt/_designers10/_aliceearly/

Meirav Heiman

This is taken from a series of photos by Meirav Heiman, they are self-portraits in different locations of Heiman doing the splits, I quite like them. And after looking through the whole series the splits start to look very strange. http://www.meirav.net/images/split/split5.html

M/M Paris

This is interesting, have just seen this on I-D's website and was particularly struck by the imagery which is by M/M (Paris), but reading further you find out this is from a set of campaign imagery for a new perfume, and the fragrance is based on black ink. More can be read at http://www.i-donline.com/i-spy/mmink-byredo

Diana's Dresses

I went to a beautiful exhibition today which had ten of Diana's dresses on display at the Assembly Rooms in Bath, really very moving too, I would highly recommend going http://visitbath.co.uk/site/whats-on/the-diana-dresses-at-the-fashion-museum-p1032343

Michelle Sank

This is the single image that won this years British Journal of Photography Award by Michelle Sank, and it has sparked quite a debate as to why it was chosen. But having read Galvin's comments I agree with a lot of his reasonings behind it, and particularly at the end where he says "Sometimes photographers have to take risks- not just in photographing a subject, but to take risks with the image itself. As Culture shifts photography has to move with it, to change and challenge if it is to remain vital. Good photography should challenge, otherwise it could so easily be ignored". http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/1811313/prize-winning-image

Richard Billingham

Richard Billingham's now very well known portraits of his family, I have always loved the bizarre flying cat photo.

Noemie Goudal

Noemie Goudal is exhibiting at the moment at Hotshoe Gallery and I have been photographing it for the website, I would have probably featured her work on my blog anyway because her work really is beautiful. More photos of the exhibition can be found at
www.hotshoegallery.com/exhibitions/noemie-goudal-les-amants/

The Paris Review

I think this is the first piece of design I have included on this blog, but these covers from the 60s are so striking and they really caught my attention. I originally came across them on Its Nice That and as a set they really are very impressive, but I think this one has to be my favourite.

Richard Avedon

I had to include Richard Avedon's Dovima with Elephants because they are incredible, I love the charisma of the elephants in contrast to Dovima's elegant poses. If I were able to have one of these prints I think I wouldn't be able to stop looking at it.

D&AD

The novelty of seeing our work on other places other than my own desktop still hasn't worn off, and last night in the early hours of the morning I was browsing on D&AD and our work popped up! Check out my Talent Profile too.

RCA Design Interactions

The RCA's Design Interactions have launched a new website of work by tutors, research fellows and associates, and it is very inspirational indeed. This particular project is by Nina Pope, and is just one of the particularly fascinating projects on the website.

Jill Greenberg | Glass Ceiling

I saw these a while ago on Its Nice That, but for some reason re-visited them today. They are from the series 'Glass Ceiling' by Jill Greenberg and inspired by a series of images she took of the US Synchronised Swim Team for a fashion shoot. They are incredible and bizarre images but what is interesting is Greenberg's view of this shoot.

Greenerg says 'they wear high heels to be "sexy", yet this is absurd, it hinders their movement and amplifies their lack of control. They adjust their swimsuits, shoes; gasp for air, and are pushed by the relentless force of the water, a metaphor for their world'.

Kim Asendorf

These are by Kim Asendorf, I came across these on 'but does it float.com', brilliant images on their own but Ralf Waldo Emerson text; 'to different minds, the same world is a hell, and a heaven', gives them a more profound meaning I think.

Robin Friend

This is by Robin Friend, a lot of his work is pretty stunning but I particularly like this photo from his series Slaughterhouse.

9 October 2010

Nadav Kander

I've already included work on my blog by Nadav Kander, his 'Obama's People' series, but he also has some amazing personal work and this is just one of his amazing images from his series 'Yantze, The Long River'

BJP

An article was written about our Class Portraits on the British Journal of Photography, our photos sparked quite a debate in the comments section, very interesting to read. http://bit.ly/cLrynT

Hotshoe Gallery

I have just started an internship at Hotshoe and have been taking photos for their website of the gallery. Also the magazine has had a complete redesign for the Oct/Nov issue and I have been photographing that too, it's now bigger and is going to be stocked in WHSmiths, very exciting.

Kim Holtermand

I don't think I've ever seen a rock this beautiful, by Kim Holtermand.

It's Nice That

Our work is going to be featured in the October issue of Its Nice That, very exciting.

Anna's one of the graduates in this month's Creative Review... they've put our Class Portraits in and our Strangers in Transit film, awesome.

Kevin Bauman

This is from a series of images by Kevin Bauman, simply titled 'Small Churches', beautiful images, I found it hard to choose just one.

26 July 2010

Michael Corridore

Part of a series by Michael Corridore, in 1000 words magazine at the moment. I find them hauntingly beautiful.

Blommers/Schumm

By Blommers and Schumm, I love these for so many reasons.

3 July 2010

Jim Naughten

Have just seen that Jim Naughten has won a pencil this year in the D&AD awards, saw his re-enactor series a while ago in Hotshoe, and I particularly like his Monk series which I haven't seen before. Beautiful and eerie, they have a strange quiet quality about them.

Its Nice That

On Its Nice That, right under Pierre Debusschere, amazing.
